Is there any icon of cinema and television more enduring than that of the toaster? Well, frankly, yes… but that hasn’t stopped us from compiling this ridiculous list of the Top 5 Pop-Culture Toasters, in anticipation of this week’s upcoming show about The Brave Little Toaster (look for it Thursday). On with the list:

5. Homer’s Time Machine (from The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror V”)

The the second segment of arguably the best installment of The Simpsons‘ annual Halloween specials, “Time and Punishment” is a delightful riff on Ray Bradbury’s classic story A Sound of Thunder. The hilarious twist? You guessed it– a toaster! We’ve seen phone booths and DeLoreans used as time machines, why not a toaster? Bet, you wish you’d thought of that, H.G. Wells!

4. The Toaster That Carol Kane Hits Bill Murray With (from Scrooged)

Okay, so maybe the toaster itself doesn’t stand out that much, but Scrooged is a classic, and the scene in which Carol Kane abuses Bill Murray is a memorable one– not to mention the fact that the Bill Murray line, “The bitch hit me with a toaster,” is alone enough to warrant a mention on this list.

3. Talkie Toaster (from Red Dwarf)

The recently exhumed British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf prominently featured a talking toaster in several episodes. Not only was the toaster an annoyance for the crew crew (persistently asking if they wanted toast) it also questioned its own existence, and the meaning of life itself. When was the last time your toaster did that? Yeah, didn’t think so.

2. The Dancing Toaster (from Ghostbusters II)

So maybe Ghostbusters II was a bit of a letdown (after all, the villain was a giant painting of Klaus Kinski and Val Kilmer’s love-child). It does however have a fantastic toaster scene in which some ectoplasmic goo combined with a Jackie Wilson tune causes a common household toaster to dance– John Lithgow would have been furious! Let’s hope the toaster makes a return appearance when Ghostbusters 3 hits theatres in 2046.

1. Toaster (from The Brave Little Toaster)

If you thought number one was going to be some cylon, you were wrong! How could we not pick The Brave Little Toaster? Title character? Check. Christ allegory? Check. Straight-to-video sequels? Check. This toaster is king of pop-culture toasters, and if you don’t believe us, check back on Thursday to hear our full episode about The Brave Little Toaster, or better yet, subscribe to the show on iTunes!
